NHLとは National Hockey League の略です。
カナダとアメリカにまたがってチームがあることから『北米プロホッケーリーグ』とも言われます。
イースタンとウェスタンの２つのカンファレンスに分かれていて、
さらに各カンファレンスが3つのディビジョン（地区）に分かれています。
カンファレンスごとにディビジョンの分け方が異なっています。
イースタン・カンファレンスはアトランティック＆ノースイースト＆サウスイーストに、
ウェスタン・カンファレンスはセントラル＆ノースウエスト＆パシフィックです。
2000-2001シーズンよりチーム数が増え、各カンファレンス15チームで、計30チームで構成されています。
スタンレーカップチャンピオンの決め方は、各ディビジョン優勝チームと
各カンファレンスの勝率上位5チーム（優勝チームをのぞく）の計8チームずつがプレーオフに進出します。
このプレーオフという制度を初めて取り入れたのがNHLと言われています
そして、両カンファレンスの優勝チームによってスタンレーカップ・ファイナルが行なわれます。
ブルース－Blues－は、ウェスタン・カンファレンスのセントラル・デビジョンに属しています。
スタンレーカップの獲得こそまだありませんが、いつも上位に位置する強いチームです。
チーム名のブルースは、あの名曲『セントルイス・ブルース』から名づけられました。
また、〝Blues〟本来の発音は〝ブルーズ〟と最後が濁ります。
アメリカで〝ブルース〟と言っても通じないかもしれませんので、注意してください。
